From July of 2010 to December of 2014, Taupin’s eclectic, entertaining and educational radio show, “American Roots Radio”, was a popular hit on SiriusXM’s The Loft.
This unique insight into American music, history and culture was a showcase for Taupin’s encyclopedic knowledge of Americana and his vast collection of great American music, from which every single track played on “The A-Double-R” was chosen. After 200 hours of programming and over 3700 tracks of music, no track was ever repeated.
American Roots Radio was probably best known for its relaxed, homey feel. Recorded every two weeks up at his Ranch in Central California, Taupin, along with his producer, amigo and loyal sidekick, Paca Thomas would create an atmosphere that one fan likened to, “sitting around the record player with your friends, discussing the albums”. Another listener said it was like, “a College Music History class, except you don’t fall asleep”.
The objective of American Roots Radio was to present a comprehensive and varied overview of American roots music encompassing all genres. Taupin’s desire was to feature the architects and pioneers, interpreters and stylists who have created, crafted and worked in formats that were invented and honed in the U.S.A.
American Roots Radio was Country and Blues and so much more. While it featured all styles of the latter you’d also hear Rock ‘n Roll, Jazz, Hillbilly, Rockabilly, Bluegrass, Bee Bop, Doo Wop, Boogie Woogie, 20’s Swing, Western Swing, Zydeco, Native American, Surf pioneers, Big Band, R n' B, Soul, Folk, Tejon, Classic Comedy, Gospel, Hawaiian and The Great American Songbook. If it was a root of an American musical genre, you would find it on American Roots Radio - The Rock of All Ages.
